Vida y legado del fascismo peruano: de la Gran Depresión a la Posguerra

Abstract

This chapter summarizes the main themes of intellectual fascism in Peru during the 1930s and 1940s. Although fascist intellectuals did not succeed in establishing a fascist regime, they introduced a blueprint for government. Drawing on the ideas of José de la Riva-Agüero, Víctor Andrés Belaúnde, and Raúl Ferrero, the chapter identifies five core elements of the fascist discourse: (1) the modernization of the Peruvian government through a strong executive and an elitist legislature, (2) the defense of corporatism, (3) the construction of a national identity ('Peruvianness') centered on Hispanism, (4) the public role of Catholicism, and (5) a staunch anti-Marxism. Reflecting both the Latin American debates of the time and the broader tenets of European fascism, these intellectuals proposed these principles as the foundation for building an authoritarian government in the context of a post-dictatorial transition.
